چکیده

Facing the difficulties associated with the preparation of crystalline ion beams in heavy ion storage rings we propose two complementary table top schemes to elucidate fundamental issues like stability criteria for moving ion crystals at low velocities. One is based on a small radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) storage ring, where by laser cooling Mg ion crystals at rest were observed, but conceptionally modified with additional acceleration electrodes and manufactured with highest mechanical precision. The other approach suggested here implies the use of an RFQ ion guide for the lateral confinement of the ions combined with buffer gas viscous damping, which could lead to an ideal starting condition for first time direct three-dimensional laser cooling in a single pass arrangement.

The quest for crystalline ion beams

The phase transition of an ion beam into its crystalline state has long been expected to dramatically influence beam dynamics beyond the limitations of standard accelerator physics. Yet, although considerable improvement in beam cooling techniques has been made, strong heating mechanisms inherent to existing high-energy storage rings have prohibited the formation of the crystalline state in the...

Ordered Ion Beam in Storage Rings

The using of crystalline ion beams can increase of the luminosity in the collider and in experiments with targets for investigation of rare radioactive isotopes. The ordered state of circulating ion beams was observed experimentally at several storage rings. New criteria of the beam orderliness are derived and verified with BETACOOL code with using molecular dynamics (MD) technique. The sudden ...

Stability of Crystalline Ion Beams

In this paper, the conditions for which three-dimensional crystalline ion beams were attained in the rf quadrupole storage ring PALLAS at a velocity of around 2800 m/s are presented. The stability of these crystalline beams when subjected to discontinuous cooling is discussed for beams of different linear density and thus of different crystal structure. The survival time seems to only weakly de...

From laser cooling of non-relativistic to relativistic ion beams

Laser cooling of stored 24Mg ion beams recently led to the long anticipated experimental realization of Coulombordered ‘crystalline’ ion beams in the low-energy RF-quadrupole storage ring PAul Laser CooLing Acceleration System (Munich). Moreover, systematic studies revealed severe constraints on the cooling scheme and the storage ring lattice for the attainment and maintenance of the crystallin...

Cooling and heating of crystalline ion beams

The crystallization of ion beams has recently been established in the rf quadrupole storage ring PALLAS (PAul Laser CooLing Acceleration System) for laser-cooled 24Mg+ ion beams at an energy of about 1 eV. Yet, unexpectedly sharp constraints had to be met concerning the confinement strength and the longitudinal laser cooling rate. In this paper, related and up to now unseen heating mechanisms a...
